The subject of the sovereignty of God (the control of God), the extent to which it exists,as well as the arguments for and against it, has been hotly debated for centuries. According to the testimony of Scripture, as well as the evidence in the world around us, God is not<\/strong> in control of everything that happens or every decision every person makes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This fact can be shocking, upsetting, and even downright unsettling to Christians. After all, if we believe that a good Father is in control of everything that happens around us, then we can also believe that the good, the bad, and the ugly are all happening for some sort of higher purpose. We can face the trials of life trusting that God\u2019s in control of the outcome, so most likely it will work out in our favor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if we believe that God is completely in control, then the burden of blame rests with Him just as much as the praise. If God controls everything we see around us, then we must praise Him for miraculous healing\u2026but also hold Him accountable for sickness, tragedies and undefinable evil. We rejoice when He saves a person\u2019s life\u2026but also accept that He was behind the life-threatening straits to begin with. More importantly, we must also eliminate the possibility of free will. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Word of God makes it abundantly clear that we are created in God\u2019s image.  Because we are created in His image, we have the God given ability to exercise our own free will. We can choose life or death, blessings or cursings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truth is that life in this world is much more complex than a God who simply pulls the strings, making all of us dance. Let\u2019s look at a few key mitigating factors in the equation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Free Will:<\/strong>
Despite what some Christian circles preach, free will does exist; God doesn\u2019t control the clothes you wear, the food you eat, or the decisions you make, whether good or bad. He also doesn\u2019t pick and choose who gets saved, who rebels, who accepts Jesus and who doesn\u2019t. If He did,\u00a0everyone\u00a0<\/em>would be saved\u2014because, as Scripture tells us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Timothy 2:3-4 (NKJV)<\/em><\/strong>
\u201cFor this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 <\/sup>\u00a0who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 Peter 3:9 (NKJV)<\/strong>
\u201c<\/em><\/strong>The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because God respects the freedom of man to choose, God doesn\u2019t force salvation on anyone; this is a pretty good indication that God isn\u2019t controlling our lives. We\u2019re calling the shots ourselves. God is definitely involved in people\u2019s lives, but He isn\u2019t dictating everything that people do. He watches us, and sometimes He intervenes\u2014but He isn\u2019t controlling every movement of our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The Devil:<\/strong>
The Bible expressly tells us that this world is not under God\u2019s control; it\u2019s \u201cunder the control of the evil one.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(1 John 5:19). <\/strong>The Evil One, Wicked One\u2026call him what you like, he\u2019s usually referred to as the Devil. Not long after the dawn of mankind, the first man, Adam, and his wife, Eve, were deceived into disobeying God. At that moment, way back in the Garden of Eden at the beginning of our human race, authority over this world was given to the Devil. It\u2019s his playground\u2014even to the extent that he was able to offer all the kingdoms of it to Jesus, in exchange for worship\u00a0(Luke 4:6).\u00a0 <\/strong>Thankfully, God didn\u2019t abandon mankind to the misery of a world controlled by darkness; not only did He send a Savior, He also has historicallyworked with us in the spiritual battle against the Devil and continues to. The Bible makes it very clear that the one in control of this world\u2014the one responsible for the suffering, evil, and sin we see around us\u2014is not God Himself, but actually His enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Natural and Moral Evil:<\/strong>
The very existence of evil itself proves that God is not in control. Let\u2019s take a look at the nature of God; He tells us through His Word that He is love, light, and all things good. Therefore, if God was in absolute control of the world, where would there be any place for evil in it? But because God gave Man free will to choose\u2014and because there is a Devil, a creature of hate and darkness, and Man chose to listen to him\u2014evil was able to come into the creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If God was controlling everything, we would not see destruction, pain, and suffering as a result of rampant sin. The creation would better reflect the goodness of the Creator. But because this world is not under His control, it reflects the choices\u2014often flawed, selfish, inconsiderate, and even downright evil\u2014of its inhabitants. This is why the future kingdom spoken of in Revelation 21-22<\/strong> has no suffering, sorrow, or pain.At that point, the Devil, and evil itself, will be no more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many other factors that come into play here. But it isn\u2019t necessary for God to be absolutely in control for things to come to pass in a certain way.Whether it\u2019s a favorable outcome or not, God isn\u2019t stacking the deck against us. Even though He isn\u2019t controlling all the circumstances, the Bible clearly tells us that He\u2019s working for our good. (Rom. 8:28)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What a relief it is to know that when we suffer, it isn\u2019t because of a God who is in control of the world and punishing us\u2014and then requiring us to love Him!\u00a0(Matt.11:37) <\/strong>And also to know that, despite the evil in this world that\u2019s under the control of the Devil, God is still moving in powerful ways for His people, bringing things together for our good. I don\u2019t know about you, but I can certainly love a God like that!\u00a0 Blessings<\/p>\n\n\n\n
